Reviewing Georgian Supermarkets

If since day one of moving to Georgia you’ve gone to the same Spar next to your house, then this gem might be just for you! Join our review of Georgian supermarkets and find out what are our thoughts.

We understand you perfectly! In a process of adaptation the last thing you want to think about is where to buy your groceries. Especially, when in the first months of your life the last thing you want to do is cook at home, and mainly your priority is to taste as much food as possible from the local cuisine. (Our favorite was Khinkaly)

Nevertheless, sooner or later a question arises, “Where can I buy an avocado, chicken bread or cereals?”.

Let us provide you a short excursion on Georgian supermarkets and other useful shops.

1. “Carrefour”

Most likely you’ve noticed their ads.
Here’s what, it is a huge network of supermarkets working in dozens of countries around the world, and in Georgia since 2012.

We’ll say it right away, the quality of products varies. But overall it’s a store. In which you can buy groceries. and not only them.

Prices are quite affordable, and there’s usually discounts on various products. We also recommend obtaining a membership card (free of charge) to receive better discounts, especially if you’re planning to shop there regularly.

In Carrefour you can find various products such as home appliances, clothing and even electronics.

In addition to that, in some of the stores you can get ready-to-eat meals (but in our opinion the choices are quite poor).

Carrefour has its own mobile application, but it has some quirks. If you want to order a delivery to your home, we recommend using Glovo’s service.

2. “GoodWill”

For this day, it’s our most popular shop for our groceries. Differs by good quality of products, and especially we recommend buying meat over there.

And we can’t say prices are much higher than in Carrefour, although there are less discounts here.

There’s a large selection of fruits and vegetables, and you can find even exotic fruits.

Also there’s a full aisle of Gluten Free products, low sugar products, various types and flours and much more.

GoodWill’s chain also have a few hypermarkets and smaller supermarkets, places in varoius parts of the city.

If you’re planning to place an order, we also recommend using Glovo.

3. “AgroHub”

Only 4 stores across the country, 3 in Tbilisi and 1 in Batumi - But we highly recommend visiting them.

For a while, it was our only place for buying avocados!

In addition to avocados, you can find here a high variety and quality of other fruits and vegetables. Moreover, they have soft and delicious cottage cheese (made exclusively by them) and various different dairy products that they produce. You can also find a great bakery there and ready-to-eat meals, Large choice of wines, fresh fish and cheese.

From the downsides - they rarely have fresh chicken breasts. The only choice you have is either to buy a whole chicken, or to buy a frozen one.

By the way, it’s the only supermarket in Georgia, where price tags are electronic! (Of Course we might be wrong, and if so, please write to us about that).

4. “Europroduct”

The name speaks for itself. It’s a chain of medium-sized supermarkets, oriented on selling products from Europe. Here you can find products from France, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Poland and more.

Here, prices are a bit higher than normal.

But, you can always find various types of cheese, sausages, prosciutto, sun-dried tomatoes, peanut butter, non-lactose and Gluten-Free products.

When it comes to alcoholic beverages, there is quite a poor assortment of european products.

Besides, Europroduct - is a real paradize for the ones that have a sweet-tooth, that want to try out something new.

In order to place an order on their website - you have to be registered.

For more information, visit their website https://europroduct.ge/en

5. “Gastronome”

We would’ve called it a boutique among product shops in Georgia.

At the moment, all 6 stores are located only in Tbilisi (but in different neighborhoods). When you enter them, you feel a special atmosphere right away.

Gastronome is rightfully considered a leader on the food market of premium-class products in Georgia. Here you will find delicacies and products of a high quality, include positions such as: Fuagara, Burrata, Stracciatella, Vegan products, Various types of oils, and much more.

At this time, their shops are importing mainly from Europe, USA, Britain and Japan.

Not surprisingly, their selection of foreign wine, other alcoholic beverages and other types of drinks is much wider than in other shops.

We recommend visiting their shops offline, since their website is far from showing all their products.

They also have a loyalty program you can sign up to.

By the way, besides having groceries stores, Gastronome also have a few restaurants, where they use their own products to prepare their meals.

Here’s a few examples:

6. “Nikora”

That’s the chain of supermarkets that has a bull on their logo on a burgundy background.

This chain can boast that for over 20 years, they maintain their leading position in the meat market, holding around 35% of it.

Here you can buy various types of sausages: cooked, smoked and a high assortment of meat products.

In addition, they have Khinkali, Dumplings, Crepe and other frozen Georgian dishes.

Nikora has their own brand of dairy products called “Products of the day”, where you can even see a Mozarella of Georgian origins. And of course, Suluguni, regular and smoked.

On their website you can gather information about their products, but unfortunately we could find prices there and it lacks the possibility to make an order.

7. “Fresko”

Small chain of supermarkets in Tbilisi - about 10 of them.

By their assortment, it more reminds us of Spar, but some of the products might be more expensive. There is a high variety of ready-to-eat products, and you can even find a few European and vegan products.

There is also a department with household chemicals, dishes and kitchen utensils.

Fresko has also a distinctive feature - they are open 24/7!

We recommend obtaining a loyalty card, which gives you an additional discount.

Their website has only information about their stores, history and company’s mission. To order groceries to your home we recommend using Glovo, and ready food using Wolt.

For daily shopping, and small purchases you can of course use "Ori Nabiji" (Affordable prices), or "Spar", with whose assortment you’re already familiar.

In addition, we recommend not to forget vegetable stalls. Usually you can find fresh vegetables and fruits there. However prices might be a bit higher sometimes, than in a supermarket.

Another place where you can buy groceries is various markets, Such as “Dezerter Bazaar”, but we’ll write more thoroughly about them in a different post.

Have a great time shopping, and hope we’ve helped you a little in finding your next adventure in a supermarket!
